Build the State-of-the-art Machine Learning Technology for the Crypto Economy

Coinbase’s mission is “to create an open financial system for the world”. Part of our strategy to achieve our mission is being the on-ramp from the fiat world to the crypto world by providing our users payment rails to purchase their cryptos. Just as in fiat payment transactions, malicious actors are attracted to cryptos to use stolen financial instruments or take over others’ accounts to make financial gains. What’s different though, is that, once cryptos are sent off the platform to a blockchain address, they become a loss immediately given the nature of blockchains being immutable and decentralized. This makes it a more challenging problem for machine learning models to capture fraudulent activities as timely as possible to prevent risky transactions with very high accuracy to minimize the loss exposure while ensuring great user experience. At Coinbase, our machine learning team has taken on the challenge and done a great job managing this risk to ensure Coinbase’s businesses grow healthily in the fast evolving crypto economy.

Michael Li is currently the VP of Data at Coinbase. His professional interests have always been "empowering people with data & technology" throughout his whole career. His work has been focused on defining and operationalizing Big Data and AI in practical terms for enterprises, and figuring out how they can drive business value through the EOI (Empower/Optimize/Innovate) framework. His industry experience spanned across Financial services, E-commerce, Social network, and now the Blockchain industry. Michael holds a Master’s degree in Engineering from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a Bachelor’s degree in Science from Fudan University.
