Straddling the boundary between contribution and solution driven science

Advancing the state of the art in the context of products and services used by hundreds of millions of customers poses challenges that go beyond those associated with advancing the state of the art in customer-free settings. In this talk, I will highlight some of these challenges and discuss approaches to overcoming them in the context of two Amazon services: Amazon Translate and Alexa.

Daniel is a Director in the Alexa AI organization and has previously held positions at the Information Sciences Institute, University of Southern California, Language Weaver, and SDL plc. He is a 2014 fellow of ACL for significant contributions to discourse parsing, summarization and machine translation and for kick starting the statistical machine translation industry.
